I have a fairly complete set of the Roll of Honour pages published in the Illustrated London News 1914-1918.

If you would like me to search for a photo of an Officer killed during the Great War then please reply to this post. I need rank, name, regiment and date of death details. There's always a possibility he may have been recorded in this publication.

N.B. it may take me a few days to reply so please be patient.

Regards,

Steve Bickmore

Sean,

Good news!! :)

I have just checked and there is a nice portrait photo of him in the September 1st 1917 edition. I will get a copy at the weekend (the bound volumes are very heavy and it takes a while to get things right for a 'sharp' scan).

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Off the top of my head I would think it was late 1916, there was a letter which his father received about the remnants of his belongings going missing, posted sometime in early 1917.

Thanks again

Hello,

Just found this entry from the local paper:

From the "Faversham Times", 28th July 1916 :

" Deep regret is felt in Dunkirk at the death of 2nd Lieut. ( temporary Captain ) William Vernon Burgess, Royal Berkshire Regiment, who was killed in action during the fighting in France between the 19th and 22nd July. The sad intelligence reached his parents by telegram from the War Office last Saturday evening. On Sunday morning, at the conclusion of the service in Dunkirk Church, the Death March was played by Mr Gerald Dunkin as a tribute to the deceased's memory.

I have a few photographs of him, but alas none in uniform:

David,

what a great photo, if you know the school he attended you have another link to follow? Looks like a Public School or University photo?

Here's a newspaper item I picked up for you from the Reading Standard in 1919.

Hi Steve,

I have a website concerned with the school which I put together about 7 years ago.

However, I moved back up north 4 years ago and haven't had chance really to chase up a lot of lose ends:

The web address is:

Thanks for looking, Steve. Capt Watson-Thomas was confirmed KiA on 21 October 1916, his obituary appearing in The Times just over a month later on 25 November. He was the local scoutmaster and most senior commissioned officer from my village. Frustratingly, although I have a photograph of his brother, who joined the Foriegn Legion (later the Royal West Kents) and was awarded the Croix de Guerre for action at Ham, I haven't been able to find a picture of Walter.
