Terry Posted 27 March , 2004 Share Posted 27 March , 2004 Having just picked up a war and victory medal pair to the Royal Sussex Regiment, I wonder if any of the Pals who concentrate on this unit might be able to help. The pair are named to 2434 Pte.W.H.Geere. My initial reaction was that with a very low number like this, is there a missing 14-15 star, or even a 14 star? Was it likely for a soldier with that low a number to have not reached the continent before 1916? I realize that there were always troops left behind, instructing, etc., but... Paul Reed Posted 27 March , 2004 Share Posted 27 March , 2004 His number could be a TF number, or from one of the New Army battalions, all of whom had low numbers like thus. It won't be a regular number. The number is missing it's prefix, which was common to all Royal Sussex numbers, which indicates he was transferred to another regiment/unit at a later stage, almost certainly. Best way to find more is to look at the MICs, or get someone to do it for you. As it is for a medal, and will enhance the value, if a pal does it I am sure Chris would appreciate a donation. Seems only fair.

Guest jgeere Posted 7 April , 2004 Share Posted 7 April , 2004 I believe this was Walter Henry Geere born 1899 at Battersea. 2 of his brothers died in the war. I believe I have sent an email to Terry giving further details but I am new to this forum and uncertain whether or not I succeeded in sending the email. I am in contact with Walter's son but unfortunately he has no information about his father that would assist. I am a very distant relative (common ancestor born 1621) who has researched the name as a one name study. Will be happy to assist further.
