My grandfather was Lance Bombardier 96250 in the 176 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery during WW1. He served in France to start with and then was posted to Italy around December 1917. Can anyone help me as to where the 176 Siege Battery would have fought in France and Italy?

Many thanks

Janet

I am sure that someome will be able to give you more information but 176 siege battery was part of the 80th Heavy Artillery Group in Italy in late 1917 and early 1918 . In ealry 1918 they were at Montello in Italy with the 51st italian division.

A good part of their war diary survives at the Public Records Office in Kew:

176 Siege Battery for Sept 1916 to Nov 1917 under ref WO 95/325

176 Siege Battery for Dec 1917 to feb 1918 under ref WO 95/4205

80 Heavy artillery group Dec 1917 to Mar 1919 also under ref WO 95/4205

Happy hunting.

Hi Simon

Thanks very much for the information on the 176th in Italy. It will be a good starting point for me. I had never got round to delving into this aspect of grandfathers history, and I had never come across mention of the 176th on line. I have his pay book but of course all entries were "in the field" - the only clue to where he served was whether he was paid in francs or lira, and a couple of leave passes.
