I understand that when numbers changed from 4 digits - 6 digits for the territorials, a system was used to assign the numbers that may give clues about the regiment.

My GGrandfather joined with number 2177 the 1st SM Bde R.F.A. (res)

He has two seperate service records stamped with the 'disembodiment on mobilisation' stamp dated 26/03/19

Each of these service records have a different no. at the top. 2177 and 825738

From the pages at the LLT, I see that numbers 820001-84000 were asssigned to the London Regiment.

Nowhere on any of his service records does it ay he was transferred to the London Regiment.

There is a transfer to the Labour Corps on 20/Oct/1917 but this has a different number - 484754.

What logical conclusions can I draw from this. Can anyone help?

You're looking in the wrong place for his 825738 number. The Londons are a Territorial Infantry regiment, you need artillery. The six-digit number you've got was allocated from one of the two following blocks....

825001-830000 240 BDE, RFA TF/ 1/1 S MIDLAND BDE

825001-830000 305 BDE, RFA TF/ 2/1 S MIDLAND BDE

Thank you so much Steve. I have been tring to untangle whether he was in the second or third line and now I guess I can rule out the third.

Slowly forward. :)

By definition, the artillery were not in the front line after trench war had started.
