How do I go about looking at my G grand fathers army records ,are they available on line? He was in the 8th Kings royal irish hussars, pre WW1 and Scots greys during WW1

Hi Sotonmate, its a bit complicated he was was born John Dick and was in the 8th Kings Royals Hussars pre WW1 as a corporal see pic, i know absolutely nothing about this part of his life other than the photo,and would really like to see what i can find out about him at this time, At the out break of WW1 he enlisted in the 2nd Royal Dragoons, scots greys as a private and changed his name to Alexander Scott on his medals are the numbers GS3954 see pic, I have been told the GS meant that he was already a soldier before the war, would like to know if any ones knows if this is correct
