Help. I've tracked down this soldiers records on the Australian National Archives after spending hours to no avail trying to find him listed on the AWM or ADFA AIF project sights.

There is another Reginald William Smith listed on the AWM search but it doesn't appear to be this man. As far as I can determine this man had service numbers- 13896, 39817 and 14028. He served as a Driver in the AASC and later on in 3 FAB.

It appears that he had a younger brother Lieutenant Walter Barnett Smith in 16 FAB.

If any Aussie members can find him it would be appreciated, if just for my sanity!

Regards,

Scott.

Hi, if hes not on the Australian war memorial or the CWGC sites it suggests he was not a casualty. Does his service record suggest otherwise.?

He wasn't a casualty so he won't be on the CWGC. He served on the Western Front so he should be on the AWM and ADFA AIF databases.

Hi Scott,

He is on the AWM Nominal Roll here

In case link breaks these are the details:

File: 48-149

Start Name: Smith,Robert Rattary

End Name: Smith, Reginald Alfred

Like you I am unable to find him on the ADFA AIF site.

Thanks Doug,

He doesn't show up on the AWM embarkation roll either. Very strange.

I noticed in his ANA records that he was about to embark and was then removed from the roll and returned to Sydney from Melbourne. I wonder if this then inadvertently carried over so that when he finally embarked he was not recorded.

The ADFA AIF data base was created from the embarkation rolls so that may explain why he is not on that site. I noticed though that if you email them they will add him to that resource.

This is your man at the NAA.

It is possible that he has been missed of the ADFA database.

Mate,

Many reinforcements to the AAMC and AASC are not shown on any Embark roll.

Many of these were small in number and were attached to a ship on sailing.

So their names would not on on the ADCA site as it lists only those in the embark rolls.

I have listed many of these men who joined the AASC or AAMC in Egypt and served there.

The closest to his number is;

SMITH Ozie 14032 Dvr AASC R AMD (Australian Mounted Div Reinforcments) 8R (8th Reinforcement) failed to reemb Albany to 32Co AASC Anzac MDT att 6 MVS CMF

Butcher age 19 from Dungog NSW Enlist 5-2-16 RTA 20-7-19

HARRISON William Robert 14030 Dvr AASC R AMD 8R to 34Co AASC Anzac MDT

Farmer 28 Goulburn NSW enlist 22-11-16 RTA 15-3-19

AVERY William Charles 14031 Dvr AASC R AMD 8R to 32Co AASC Anzac MDT 43Bn

Clerk 19 Goulburn NSW enlist 5-2-17 RTA 10-7-19

HOAD Walter 14033 Dvr AASC R AMD 8R to Dvr 32Co AASC Anzac MDT to Cpl 34Co

Sydney NSW Enlist 4-12-16 RTA 26-7-19

Sorry

Thanks all,

I noticed that he was disembarked on his original statement of service last night. Is it likely that he could have been ill or could he have perhaps been in a bit of trouble on the boat? If he had been in trouble though it is unlikely that he would have re-enlisted on the same paper and under the same name? Any thoughts.

It looks like he disembarked on A9 from Melbourne on 11/5/17. About six months after first embarkation.

I might e-mail them Doug. I thought there was a thread a while back about this site no longer being active.

Scott

Thanks Tim,

That's one large family there. I can't find a William G Smith who served who matches and Percy and Horace seem too old for war service.

Only Walter and Reginald are listed on the memorial. Reginald incorrectly.

Scott

Thanks all.

14028 Reginald William Smith is now on the ADFA Database. Sent an e-mail last night and a reply was waiting for me in the morning and he has been added. As Steve Becker referred to , apparently the AASC records are a mess.

At least he should be easier to find for the next researcher or relative.

Regards,

Scott
