Could someone please please take a look at this Medal Card on Ancestry:-

George R AwcockRegiment or Corps:2nd Royal Sussex Regiment, 2nd Royal Sussex Regiment Regimental number:9750, 6390513

Written at the side of his name in brackets is (M.M.) I have looked on The Long Long Trail, which appears to suggest that he won the Military Medal, but can find no other reference. There is a family story of someone winning the MM.

Many thanks in advance

Jennifer

There are very few official sources for finding out where and when a man was awarded a Military Medal. They were however often mentioned in the local press.

A bit of guesswork: The large list of awards to the 2nd Battalion in that Gazette may mean that the award was part of a major attack by the battalion. I do some research on the Northamptonshire Regiment. The 1st Northamptons were in the same Division and received a long list of M.M.s in the same Gazette. Those that I have dated from that Gazette date from the attacks made by 1st Division around the 24th September 1918 near Pontruet (the Northamptons were on the left side of the attack on a spur of high ground near Pontruet with the 2nd Royal Sussex on the right). That may be the date of Pte. Awcock's gallantry as well.

Steve.

P.S. The 6390513 number was issued from 1921 onwards, so it is likely that the Ministry of Defence still hold his service records.

Thankyou so much both of you, in partciular Steve for all that information. We shall pursue it further. I am doing this for a friend who has Parkinson's and can no longer use the computer. He will be thrilled as he was lead to believe his father, (who died in 1942 when my friend was only 11,) had been awarded the MM.

Regards and Thanks, Jennifer

He was a pre war regular and 'Old Contempitable.' I take the comment "C/R issd" to be that the Clasp and Roses were issued. That should be confirmed on the medal roll.

If you edit your first post so that the heading includes Royal Sussex Regiment you may attract the attention of one of our Sussex members who may be able to help further.

I would suggest that you may be able to contact Paul Reed (historian/book author), who is a member here either through his members listing or here:

Hi,

I just came across this old thread after a google search. I have been researching a relative called Joseph Henry C Watson, born 1893. I am now trying to find out if this chap;

G/6601 iSjt. Watson, J. H. C., 2nd Bn. (Brede).

as listed above, could be the same chap.

My J. H. C. Watson is listed as born at Rye district. This is not too far from Brede.

After reading the above, I am hoping that someone has done some research on this event and can pass me there findings.

Is there a medal card for him available somewhere.

Thanks Dave

Yes there is. There is an SWB card on www.ancestry.co.uk. Card and medal roll show he enlisted 10th December 1914 and was discharged on 8th April 1819 due to his wounds, and both say "M.M.". Medal roll shows aged 26 yr and 3 mos.

There are two cards at The National Archives. One will be the same as that on ancestry, the other is the Military Medal card, where his name is spelled in full as Joseph Henry Cook Watson. That should tell you whether he is your man or not.

Cannot find his card relating to BWM/VM etc.

Noel

Hi Dave,

I am Joseph Henry Cook Watson's Great Grandson. I have done a little research on him and found out that he was wounded by gas on the 8th April 1918, then wounded by shrapnel in the ankle on the 23rd October 1918, then returned to England on the 29th October.

I am hoping to head down to the records office in Chichester to try and find out more from the war diary.

There is a family story of how he came to win the MM. Apparently he was in charge of placing some field guns, the first position he was told to move them too he ignored and placed them where he thought they should be, his move paid off as the Germans they were ambushing moved in the area he predicted. May be this is the counter attack at Pontruet?

Have you managed to find anything else out?

I have his medal card if you want me to forward this to you?
