Hello all

It's been a while since I posted

I am trying to find out more about an outfit called the Nairobi Defence Force. My suspicion is that they were Kenya's version of the "Home Guard" but any information on them would be greatly appreciated.

I googled them but all that came up was the detaisl of 2 medals which had been auctioned.

Wondered where you'd got to !

There are four files at Kew,three with correspondence and papers for the GHQ Nairobi for parts of WW1. These are WO158/503 (Jun-Dec 1915) ; 510 (Mar to May 1916) and 888 (May to Sept 1916. The fourth is the BWM and VM Medal Rolls for WW1 for the Nairobi Defence Force under WO329/2344.

Thanks ever so much Sotonmate. It's good to be back!

I'll try and get someone to trawl through the files you've mentioned at Kew for some detail on them.

A bit late coming across this thread but if you're still after some information then The East African Standard of Saturday June 26, 1915 has three full columns with details of the meetings held to form the Force. Also included are the original standing orders by Captain John Corbet Ward.

If you'd like a copy of the page PM me with your email address.
