Hello,

I dont know if any one can help me, but im researching my great grandfather Harry Stokes. I know from family that he enlisted voluntarily in the first world war in around 1916-17, family members cant remember exactly when and no one seems to have any other details about this, apart from the fact that he may of had a medal. Anyway, I have his wifes death certificate (Emily, she died in 1917), on this he is described as "Harry Stokes, a private in the 2nd batt cheshire yeomanry 2391, a maker up and packer.

Harry was born in 1884 in heaton norris, cheshire and died in march 1947 at stockport. He was the son of William Henry Stokes.

Any help would be much appreciated, i cant find any letters, records or his medal (if indeed it exists),

Thank you

It'll be worth you looking up a copy of Richard Verdin's "Cheshire (Earl of Chester's) Yeomanry. From memory it has a chapter covering the home service squadrons.
