Lesley' I suspect you just mean "Middlesex Regiment". The North appelation would have applied to one of the constituent regiments, pre-1881 (57th or 77th; I can't remember which).

The 17th Middlesex have just been subject to a rather good book by Andrew Riddoch (When the whistle blows is the title, I believe), so if you have questions about them, look at a well-known on-line book store (named after a South American river) and it's quite reasonably priced there.

Hi Steven, The book looks a good read. My Grandfather I guess would've served in the 17th, and later the 21st, a visit to Kew is due I think. Lesley
