Another attempt to see if anyone can help me with a date of enlistment that might approximate to this service number of a soldier belonging to 9th Bn. Rifle Brigade - S/11997. Thanks if you can help in any way.

Chris.

I am sure you are right but I have a man S/7787 who enlisted 4/1/1915.

Neil,

Ordinarily the numbers around peter's request would denote a May 1915 enlistment. However for some reason there appear a good few numbers in the S/11000 range that appear as 9/14 enlistments. In the case of Peter's request Rifleman E.M. Stimson, S/11997 died on the 24/8/15 and is buried in Lijssenthoek.

Your number S/7787 Fred Willis of the 9th RB, who died in one of the bloody Loos diversionary attacks on the 25/9/15, falls into the enlistment date we would expect i.e. Dec 14/Jan 15. I have no idea why there are a good few of these S/11000 range in September 14 enlistments but they are there. The only thing that I can imagine is that there may have been some confusion in going over to the S Prefix numbers as up to the beginning of September the Z and B Prefix had been used, maybe the initial number given was S/1997 (which would be about right) was initailly given and was already issued so they put another 1 in front of it????.

Very interesting! As you say, my man was killed in August 1915, so is much more likely to have been a Sept 14 enlistment. He arrived in France on June 30th 1915 and my only other query would be why he didn't travel with the rest of the 9th RBs, which I think arrived in France on May 20th.

Peter,

Does your man's service record survive. He was probably sent out as a reinforcement to the 9th RB so could have trained with say the 14th or 15th RB and sent out to the 9th later, as the 9th did lose some men both in May & June 1915.
