David W Posted 2 February , 2009 Share Posted 2 February , 2009 Hi all I have accessed the Naval Record of a relative who served in the RN from the 1860s onwards. There is a column headed 'GC Badges Worn'. It has intials GI, DI, RI, occurring several times, with dates against each, which are presumably the dates that each Good Conduct Badge was awarded. Can anyone advise please what the initials stand for. Many thanks
horatio2 Posted 2 February , 2009 Share Posted 2 February , 2009 I think this should read G1, D1, R1 referring to the first GCB being granted, deprived (as a punishment) and restored.
Signals Posted 2 February , 2009 Share Posted 2 February , 2009 Granted 1. Deprived 1,(for some offence). Restored 1. So if he three stripes, this would drop to 2 with loss of money, until it would be restored. DB
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 4 February , 2009 Share Posted 4 February , 2009 Also messes up his record for getting the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 4 February , 2009 Share Posted 4 February , 2009 BTW you will need to cross reference the ships he was on with lists of those qualifying for medals or non medal actions as this is rarely on the service records.
