Peter Bennett Posted 3 February , 2009 Author Share Posted 3 February , 2009 Thanks Mike Hopefully if MIC is correct it is a quick fix Peter
Terry Denham Posted 3 February , 2009 Share Posted 3 February , 2009 The original CWGC register says T and so you will need some documentation. It is not a recent scanning error.
John_Hartley Posted 3 February , 2009 Share Posted 3 February , 2009 GRO Overseas Deaths index also has him as George. Death certificate reference is I.30.212. No doubt an interesting co-incidence but the GRO has another George Ross with a similar NFs service number - 22/1260 - also a 1916 death. apwright Posted 3 February , 2009 Share Posted 3 February , 2009 Actually that's interesting. The MIC for 25/1260 George Ross, Northd Fus, says "Not identical with 22/1260 George Ross, Northd Fus. And indeed there is another MIC for 22/1260 "Not identical" with the other one. Both cards marked "DoW", but only one of them is in the CWGC database, as far as I can see. Can I smell a non-com? Both men are George Ross in GRO War Deaths page 3128: ROSS George Pte 22/1260 Nrth Fus 1916 I.31 217 ROSS George Pte 25/1260 Nrth Fus 1916 I.30 212 Adrian EDIT: John beat me to it! EDIT again: Different dates of death and a slightly different service number for the 25th Bn man on SDGW (FindMyPast version): Name: George ROSS Regiment, Corps etc.: Northumberland Fusiliers Battalion etc.: 22nd Battalion (Tyneside Scottish). Last name: Ross First name(s): George Initials: G Birthplace: Kelsoe, N.B. Enlisted: Sunderland Residence: Rank: PRIVATE Number: 22/1260 Date died: 2 February 1916 How died: Died of wounds Theatre of war: France & Flanders Name: George ROSS Regiment, Corps etc.: Northumberland Fusiliers Battalion etc.: 25th Battalion (Tyneside Irish). Last name: Ross First name(s): George Initials: G Birthplace: South Shields Enlisted: South Shields Residence: Rank: PRIVATE Number: 25/1250 Date died: 8 July 1916 How died: Died of wounds Theatre of war: France & Flanders
Peter Bennett Posted 3 February , 2009 Author Share Posted 3 February , 2009 I think this must be the other George Ross. Name: ROSS, GEORGE Initials: G Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Northumberland Fusiliers Unit Text: 22nd (Tyneside Scottish) Bn. Age: 32 Date of Death: 02/02/1916 Service No: 221260 Additional information: Son of Donald and Jane Ross, of 3, Oven Wynd, Kelso, Roxburghshire. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: II. M. 8. Cemetery: ESTAIRES COMMUNAL CEMETERY AND EXTENSION Amazing how these things go off at a tangent, I was not looking for a non-com but trying to trace the family of another Ross from South Shields. Presumably the "first" Ross will not be changed unless the death certificate is produced ? Thanks everyone Peter
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 9 February , 2009 Share Posted 9 February , 2009 Would the service records if they turned up be acceptable proof?
