CSM E.A.West DCM

Dear all,

I have recently received a request for information from the grandson of CSM Ernest Albert West, DCM. CSM West enlisted in 1910 and served overseas during the war with the 2nd Devons. I have surmised that, as a battalion machine-gunner, he was transferred to the MGC on its formation in late 1915 and thus became a member of 23 MG Coy (relating to the 23rd Infantry Brigade) and later the 8th MG Battalion (8th Division). This would explain the fact that, though no longer a member of the Devons, he would have served in proximity and/or support of his old mates.

That said, CSM West's grandson has requested additional information that I am unable to provide and I hope that chums may be able to help out. First, he is unable to find any citation for the award of the DCM...only the London Gazette Supplement entry for 3rd June 1918..any ideas as to where the actual citation might be found? And secondly, CSM West appears to have been taken prisoner in the aftermath of the 1918 Aisne battle, but where might he have been sent and interned?

Any thoughts/help would be much appreciated, and I will pass them on to the individual concerned with thanks

Andy

Here is his citation - London Gazette 21-10-1918

17551 Sjt. E. West, M.G. Corps (Larkbear).

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This N.C.O., who has served continuously in France since 1914 and has taken part in every battle in which the division has been engaged, has proved himself on every occasion a cool and gallant soldier. Both in and out of the line he has rendered services of exceptional value.

EDIT: I agree with your surmising as to his movements. He would have been an original transfer to the MGC in early 1916.

Steve.
