Ralph J. Whitehead Posted 23 March , 2004 Share Posted 23 March , 2004 I have always wanted to see an English version of the two German Somme books published by the Reichsarchivs in 1927, Somme Nord Teil I and Somme Nord Teil II. These books cover the German experience on the Somme for the month of July. I feel that an English version would be a useful source of information to anyone studying the battle in July by providing details and maps from the other side of the wire. However, does anyone have any information or ideas on what restrictions you might face having a book translated and then published. I am most concerned with the issue of publishing. Any assistance or advice is warmly welcomed. Ralph
salientpoints Posted 23 March , 2004 Share Posted 23 March , 2004 Hi Ralph, Please take a look on my website under 'photos and reference' you will find information on publishing here. Regards Ryan
AOK4 Posted 23 March , 2004 Share Posted 23 March , 2004 Ralph, If you want to make a translation, I suggest you contact the Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv in Freiburg as they are the successors of the Reichsarchiv. They might tell you if it's allowed or not etc. Regards, Jan

bmac Posted 23 March , 2004 Share Posted 23 March , 2004 As they were both published in 1927 I suspect they are both out of copyright which I believe to be 75 years (currently, until the Disney Corporation persuades Congress to extend it again in order to protect their cartoon copyrights on Mickey Mouse etc.). The Naval and Military Press also regularly re-print regimental histories maybe they have some information. PS I feel vaguely bad about asking this but, if anyone knows of someone who can translate some extracts from German regimental histories for me, I'd be grateful. About 30 pages in total. Willing to pay.
David Gregory Posted 5 April , 2004 Share Posted 5 April , 2004 Hi bmac, I can translate extracts from German regimental histories, but would like to know exactly what needs to be done and if there is any deadline before making you an offer. Please accept my apologies if this is wrong place to post this message. Regards, David
