Glenn Warnes Posted 23 March , 2004 Share Posted 23 March , 2004 I am researching my Grandfathers British Army service history and some records survied. He enlisted in 1905 and was working in the coal mines before then (1901 census) and also at the time of his marriage in 1914 in Risca Wales (as per his marriage certificate - Coal Hewer) I would say he was in the Territorials, and working in the mines as well. He also went back to the mines after discharge as my uncle was born in Wales in 1919 an he was classed as a Coal Miner on the B/Certificate. I did some checking on the net and there was an artillery battery in the Territorials at Risca and Newport (1st Monmouthshire Bty. (Territorial Force) at Newport and 2nd Monmouthshire Bty (Territorial Force) at Risca) in around the early 1900 and in 1914 which went overseas with the 4th Welsh Brigade, Welsh Division (53rd Div). From what I can tell the Batteries were mobilised for full time service. I don't know what happened at that time regarding mobilising Territorials, you may be able to shed some light. If he was in the Territorials would there be any records of his service in them from 1905, possibly enlistment papers etc. Would there be any unit histories or records surviving from these units.
