SS MORDENWOOD Official No. 128808

http://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/viewcrews.p...cial_No=128808+

have Crew Lists for 1910, 1913,1914, & 1916.

Morgan may have been on her in 1916.

You could ask the Maritime History Archive if he is.

Have you asked the ShipsList Email Discussion List?

Hi,

Don't know if you have a picture of her or not but apparently Christies sold an oil on canvas study of the Mordenwood not that long ago, so there's at least one picture of her out there. No luck on photoship.co.uk, but will keep digging.

No hits on NY Times, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, The Scotsman, or Atlanta Constitution newspaper archives, either!

Have you read this account of the attack (in German) which has a few more details than what I have been reading thus far:

I second the sugegstion of checking into the Crew Lists. Though a bit pricey, they may contain more helpful information than one might originally think.

Hi.

Nothing on Boatswain Morgan, I'm afraid.

The "British Merchant Ships Sunk by U-boat in World War One" By A. J. Tennent (2006) says the Master of Mordenwood was taken prisoner but that doesn't appear to be correct.

W. G. RENDALL, Master "Mordenwood", d.18/05/1917

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...asualty=3031958

From the Dictionary of Disasters At Sea, (Hocking):

MORDENWOOD

Constantine & Pickering S.S. Co.; 1910; Ropner & Sons; 3,125

tons; 331x47x23-3; 271 n.h.p.; 9-5 knots; triple-expansion engines.

The steamship Mordenwood was torpedoed and sunk by a German

submarine 90 miles S.E. by. S.1/2S: of Cape Matapan on May 19th,

1917. The captain and 20 men were killed.

A list of Orcadian Casualties in War At Sea, 1914-1918, give the master's name as William G. Rendall, age 46, from Westray (Orkney Islands), though gives his date of death as 8th of May.

regards,

Martin

Hi Kath,

Here is a rough translation (very rough!) of the Mordenwood section. Perhaps a native German speaker might do better...

On 8 May 1917, he ran out clock vs. 22 from Gjenovic. On 19 May he viewed against the clock 8 steamer Aysgarth and Mordenwood, which of the trawlers Relonzo and Limewold have been backed up. To 9:12 lanzierte he torpedo and hit the steamer Mordenwood, 3125 GRT, while 21 were men of the crew were killed. The submarine was immediately with water bombs beworfen. On 22 May he attacked the steamer Suzanne Marie, 3106 GRT, The torpedo failed but, in contrast to the opinion Prášil his goal. SMU 29 reached on 25 May 16 clock Gjenovic again.

... Perhaps a native German speaker might do better...

So it's my turn

****

Summary of Linienschiffsleutnant Leo Prasil's patrols with the austrian U 29:

On 08.05.1917 he left Gjenovic (Cattaro) around 10 p.m.

On the 19.05. at 08.00h he sighted steamers AYSGARTH and MORDENWOOD which were escorted by HMT RELONZO and LIMEWOLD. At 09.12h he fired one torpedo and hit MORDENWOOD, 3125 g.r.t., in the process 21 men of the crew died. The submarine immediately was chased with depth-charges.

On 22.05.1917 he attacked S/S MARIE SUZANNE, 3106 g.r.t., but the torpedo missed, in contrast to the opinion of Prasil.

Austrian U 29 returned to Gjenovic on 25.05.1917 at 16.00h.

****

Notes from me:

- 8 survivors rescued by RELONZO, trawlers dropped just 4 depth-charges altogether

- in case of MARIE SUZANNE Prasil reported the steamer torpedoed and listing with the escorting trawler being stopped, but this attack was not even observed by the British!

So the 19th. May is confirmed as the date of the attack.

Hello

Chief Boatswain Harold Morgan was my great-uncle. I would be interested in anything you have about him. My father has done some investigating into our ancestry and he, of course, knew his father and most of his aunts and uncles but not Harold, after whom he is named.

We have a photo of Harold in uniform.

Best wishes

Brian Morgan
