Identifying Scottish Uniforms worn by my father

Hello,

I am new to this forum and am seeking any information I can in identifying the uniforms pictured.

Both are of my father, one taken about 1914 I suspect and the other early in 1916.

In the first picture, he appears wearing a Sam Brown belt and wearing gloves and with a cane.

I suspect it is a Territorials uniform, but am uncertain of his rank or unit.

I know he became a lance corporal at some point.

He apparently served with the TF, did some time with the Royal Engineers and was shipped to the

Dardenelles in June 1915 where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieut in July 1915 and serving with

the Highland Light Infantry (52nd Div, 1/7th Blytheswood).

The second picture I know has the HLI badge on his lapel and as he is wearing a collar and tie, I

know it must be him as an officer.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Enjoy the pictures.

Charles

Charles,

The handsome gentleman in the upper photo is an officer (2nd Lieutenant) in the Highland Light Infantry. The photo shows him in a HLI Blue Patrol Jacket, it would have box-pleated vents at the back - running down from the seam along the yoke of the jacket.

The lower photo shows him wearing a service dress jacket, he is not wearing the usual TF 'T' on the collar - that does not mean he is not with a TF battalion.

The glengarry would be a very dark green.

Hope this helps

Was the name of your father Alexander Brown Stewart?

Hi Mel,

No. He was James Edward Morton, born in Lanark in 1894.

Cheers

Charles,

I forgot to point out, and as a point of interest, the jacket has a cutaway. The HLI was left out of the Highland Region by the Cardwell/Childers reforms. Regardless of that, it generally considered itself a Highland Regiment. A legacy of this is the cutaway on the Blue Patrol Jacket - which was only necessary if wearing a sporran.
