towisuk Posted 17 February , 2009 Posted 17 February , 2009 Ok TT, whats the catering like at that time of the evening? I've never been in Tommies yet, passed it loads of times..but never got inside. I'm thinking it might save on cooking our evening meal if there's anything that tickles the tastebuds on the menu regards Tom Ok TT, whats the catering like at that time of the evening? trenchtrotter Posted 17 February , 2009 Author Posted 17 February , 2009 Tommies food is simple...steak / ham / omlette and chips. Portions are great but rough and ready and very filling. I ate there every night on my Nov 08 trip and was well filled for my next days walks. Nothing fancy but honest grub. 10 euros is what I recall for a meal. You must visit Tommies if only to see his trench ( though it is falling into disrepair unfortunately ). It is also a convienient meeting place. I wont reopen the debate but I like it and others dont. Word of warning! he can be hit and miss as to being open. For no reason sometimes he is just closed. If so I usually have a beer at the Sports Bar or Cafe Davis in Hebuterne. Both nice but the Sports Bar has a WW1 interest! See you over there...cant wait. TT PS Mick...would love to see your drinking trousers and also are we still in agreement? PS where was my valentines card? TT
Mick D Posted 17 February , 2009 Posted 17 February , 2009 The last 2 weeks of March looks as though its going to be busy with forum members. I will put on my best drinking trousers. Mick And your dancing shoes perhaps ? Mick
auchonvillerssomme Posted 18 February , 2009 Posted 18 February , 2009 My dancing days ended after the incident at the Madness concert circa 1980. My drinking trousers are the special ones with the extra deep pockets and sponge clean knee pads. As for the Valentines card I was hoping that we would agree that it is a comercialised guilt trip designed to fill the wallets of card makers and rosegrowers...true love transcends such baubles. Mick
trenchtrotter Posted 18 February , 2009 Author Posted 18 February , 2009 Mick, Totally in agreement with you! Hope to meet you "over there" and perhaps see your Middlesex relics. Regards all, TT
auchonvillerssomme Posted 18 February , 2009 Posted 18 February , 2009 TT does of course mean my Middlesex Regiment relics. Thought I would clear that up before any confusion.
towisuk Posted 5 March , 2009 Posted 5 March , 2009 Mr TT is all booked for eight whole days on the Somme late March. Usually you will find me at Tommies from 1800 to 1930 ish. If anyone is around feel free to say hello. Once again got my pass stamped by Mrs TT.........dunno how but I sure married the right gal!!! If anyone needs pictures of any cemeteries in the area let me know and I can usually help. Regards TT Are you going from one of the southern ports? I'll be on the Hull-Zeebruge ferry on Friday the 20th if you are taking the northen route regards Tom
trenchtrotter Posted 6 March , 2009 Author Posted 6 March , 2009 Am on Norfolk Dover - Calais Sat Morn!! Regards TT
towisuk Posted 6 March , 2009 Posted 6 March , 2009 I'll be landing at Zeebrugge Saturday morning........Longueval Saturday evening Tom
trenchtrotter Posted 11 March , 2009 Author Posted 11 March , 2009 Have been sat in my garden in the Spring sunshine. The Daffs are about to bud and I can hear the birds twittering and a wood pecker yaffling. In the distance a chain saw is at work. If I close my eyes I could almost be at Mametz Wood. Only thing missing is the Buzzards cry. Not long to go. TT
Mick D Posted 12 March , 2009 Posted 12 March , 2009 What is your itinerary ? Just planning mine for mid April. Mick
trenchtrotter Posted 12 March , 2009 Author Posted 12 March , 2009 Mick, We dont really have an itenery. As I have been going to the Somme since 1985 I dont always visit the main sites ie Newfoundland Park etc. My brother and I tend to park the car in a vilage and then go for a long walk across fields, along tracks etc. And see where we end up. We usually have a day or so away from the Somme but will limit distance this year to conserve fuel in light of awful exchange rate. As we stay in Fonquevillers it is as easy to get to Bullecourt / Arras sites as it is the Somme extrmeties ie Morval / Combles etc so will do some walks up that way also. And of course one thing that is not negoitiable is a beer after the walk at the end of the day at Tommies or elsewhere. Regards TT
trenchtrotter Posted 19 March , 2009 Author Posted 19 March , 2009 OK finished work today! This time tomorrow Im well on me way to France. Will wear my badge and hope to see some pals at Tommies. Eight days "en France" Regards TT
towisuk Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 Stopped by Tommy Bar the other evening (Monday) to see if TT and company were in...found the place closed with some builders working in the vicinity. So I never got to share a beer with any of our Forum friends in the area, used the cafe in Longueval where we were staying instead. regards tom

I'd agreed to by a friend a beer there and we had to go the bar down the road. It was a General Strike in France on the 19th but I didn't think Le Tommy was a hot bed of union activity! John
trenchtrotter Posted 30 March , 2009 Author Posted 30 March , 2009 Hello all, I am back! Wonderful trip all round. Sorry to have missed some pals....yes Tommies was hit and miss re opening. We had to go to some other bars including the other one in Pozieres, and sampled the two bars in Hebutern. Both friendly. Tommies was open the remaining days. Will post some piccies soon.. Some highlights 1. Weather threw all it could at us from sun to really heavy squally rain. Got a thourough hammering but had all the right gear! 2. Some wonderful piccies taken. 3. Saw me old Forum pal Tarten Underground. 4. Quality time with my Bro! 5. He had some luck in the fields (I know the conflicting views), a Middlesex cap Badge at Guillemont ( 13th Battalion ) at Arrow Head Copse, a R W Kent shoulder title at Guedecourt, a Mauser (left in situ), a spoon stamped ASH 3992 on the rear ( work in progress). 6. Managed to rebury what was left of a poor German soldier we found on the surface disturbed by the winter ploughs, his bones ( some not much ) his pocket knife, buttons, ammo belt and rounds, small fraction of his Gott Mitt Uns belt. Left a cross on the spot and buried deep enough I hope that the plough wont disturb again. I did seek advice re contacting the authorities but the consensus opinion was that there was insufficient for them to attend. We did a full probing dig but there was nothing to ID him or find much more of him. RIP. 7. Not a highlight but this year I saw more human remains on the surface including three seperate lots of teeth. The cold winter frosts perhaps? 8. Walked for miles in areas I have only previously touched upon. Think I lost some weight. Old Ted..thanks for the invite to drop by but time just flew and before I knew it was on way home. Did drive past a few times but always on route somewhere..."L'annee prochaine peut etre? Bad French sorry. Will tell more on new threads soon. Regards TT

K Ronson Posted 22 September , 2010 Posted 22 September , 2010 Hi, Did you ever get the photo that you wanted? We go to the area very regularly and will be there in late October 2010. We would be happy to oblige. Bren and Kevin. quote name='myos' timestamp='1234726381' post='1120816'] <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->If anyone needs pictures of any cemeteries in the area let me know and I can usually help.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Hi TT I am looking for a picture of a grave in Vergies Communal Cemetery, if it is anywhere near your route. There are four Commonwealth War graves, only one from WW1 and that's the one I'm after. Robert Marsden Rigby, 2Bn Scots Guards, Military Plot, Row I. Grave 22. Andy
trenchtrotter Posted 22 September , 2010 Author Posted 22 September , 2010 Heck, this has resurfaced! Bought back a memory or two. I never got to the cemetery in question so I never completed the teak. I hope he has a copy now though? TT
