Military Buttons

Can anyone help by recommending a good book or website to study and maybe buy buttons from all nations?

I am saving up for a metal detector  and can't afford to buy any more medals just now, they are a bit too expensive.

I have seen a lot of buttons on ebay, but I am not sure how to know if they are original and correctly described and priced.

Thank you to everyone for any help.

Hello Kai,

Here is a small list of books for military buttons, some of which are probably out of print by now, but you might be able to find some on Abebooks etc.

Australian.

Buttons of the Defence Forces in Australia, by J. K. Cossum, published 1988, ISBN 0 7316 3083 1.

Canadian.

Buttons of the Canadian Militia Army Naval and Airforces 1900-1990, by Eric Smylie, ISBN 1-55125-004-7.

British.

Buttons of the British Army 1855-1970, by Howard Ripley, ISBN 0-85386-569-X.

Buttons of the Regular Army 1855-2000, by Howard Ripley/Denis A. Darmanin, ISBN 0-9524461-1-1.

Shoulder Belt Plates and Buttons, by Major H. G. Parkyn, O.B.E.

The International Uniform Buttons Collectors Club can be contacted through the Golden Age Buttons website.

Regards,

David.

Hi David

I have never seen a copy of Buttons of the Regular Army 1855-2000, by Howard Ripley/Denis A. Darmanin, ISBN 0-9524461-1-1.

Does it follow the same format as the other Ripley?

Hi Mick,

The newer Ripley book uses line drawings, not photos as in the older publication. It has soft covers, 68 pages. I believe they have just published a similar one for Yeomanry buttons.

Great I will keep a look out for it. I used to correspond with Mr Ripley years ago and always found him to be very generous with his knowledge and time.

Hi Kai!

I can recommend the best book about german buttons. Unfortunateley , it´s written in german, but it´s got 487 pages and more than thousand photos. It´s called "Lüdenscheider Knopfbuch, Uniformknöpfe, im Frieden wie im Krieg" by Walter Hostert

Prussian that's a great help, I am interested in the German buttons too, I am taking German language at school and can always ask my teacher for help if I get stuck.

Thanks again to everyone for helping me

My cunning plan is to buy a detector and find coins on the beach, my mate got $28 once and told me a guy once found $80 in coins. I live on the beachfront.
