47783 Charles E. Margetts Rifle Brigade

In my 23rd London thread we were trying to find the identity of 2765 C.E.Margetts.

We know he was serving in 1/23rd in 1915 to qualify for the Star and his MIC for that exists, but there is no sign of a BWM/VM MIC and he doesn't appear on the 23rd London BWM/VM roll.

This led me to assume that he must have transferred regiments at some point and his BWM/VM is on their roll.

I've been playing around with FreeBMD and I think I have him limited to three candidates, all called Charles.

They are:

Charles Edward Margetts. Birth registered Wandsworth Dec 1892

Charles Ernest Margetts. Birth registered Paddington Dec 1893

Charles Edward Margetts. Birth registered Poplar Jun 1899.

Of the three I'd be inclined to think the Wandsworth candidate is the 23rd man because of recruitment location and an ASC man is known to be Charles Ernest. The Poplar man looks to be too young to be enlisting in 1914 and actually making it to F&F with the battalion in 1915.

The Rifle Brigade candidate is a 47783 Charles E. Margetts and he's entitled to a pair. The question now is whether he's our 23rd London man or an 18/19 year old from Poplar sent over in 1918. Does anyone (Andy?) have an estimate of when 47783 Rifle Brigade would have enlisted/gone to France?

If the Rifle brigade man is not the 23rd London man then where is the BWM/VM roll entry/MIC- we know he received a trio so there has to be a record somewhere.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Matthew

Hi Matt,

If he is the RB man he was attached to the 8th Londons. I will send you the full size page from the medal rolls and have a little dig around to see if I have anything. His number falls in the sequence of transfers from other Regiments or the Training Reserve although unfortunately in this case it does not make any mention of the unit he transferred from.

Matt,

This sequence of numbers are all over the place with regard to enlistments but generally around Margetts number you would be looking at 3rd Quarter 1917 which would tie in with your Poplar boy.

Thanks Andy, that was quick.

I agree. Looks like the RB man was from Poplar and the 23rd man most likely was from Wandsworth, so at least that may be resolved.

Still leaves the location of his BWM/VM medal roll entry a mystery.

Best regards,

Matthew

Hi Matt,

Absent voters list??? I believe that one survives for Wandsworth.

Great Idea.

Wasn't aware of it surviving. Have to add that to the list of things to when next in London.

Best regards,

Matthew
