JillyNutton Posted 14 January , 2009 Share Posted 14 January , 2009 Hi, My mum was given a WW1 medal amongst a box of bric a brac a few years ago and is keen to give it back to either the soldier's family if we can find them or to a regimental museum. Can anyone advise us the best way of going about this? We know the soldier was a in the Royal Irish Regiment. Grateful for any advice/info Thanks Jilly

JillyNutton Posted 14 January , 2009 Author Share Posted 14 January , 2009 We've managed to get some info from the medal itself - we believe its Private Harry Cookson, Reg no. 6978

Droocoo Posted 14 January , 2009 Share Posted 14 January , 2009 It's good of you to have thought of returning the medals, however a regimental museum has many of these groups, and may not want this particular one. On the other hand, returning it to its rightful owner is an excellent option!! Are you sure that he is not a relative of yours??
JillyNutton Posted 15 January , 2009 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2009 Thanks Droocoo and Harry, We have no Cooksons in our family tree, my mum remembers her next door neighbour giving her the box of bric a brac. The neighbour was a bit of a hoarder - collecting all sorts of weird and wonderful things, so my mum believes that the neighbour may have picked it up at a junk shop etc. My mum is really keen to get it back to the family of the person - I just wasn't sure how feasible that was, especially as it had found its way into a junk shop in the first place. I found my own Gt-Uncle's war medals in the Glosters Regimental museum, which gave me the idea of sending to something similar. Its really sad to think that this soldier put his life on the line for our country and his medal ends up in a box of junk. Jilly
auchonvillerssomme Posted 15 January , 2009 Share Posted 15 January , 2009 Better in a box of junk to be saved by you than in a skip. There are many collectors of medals to the Royal Irish Regiment, if you really don't want to keep it put on ebay and donate the money raised to a good cause. Nigel Marshall Posted 15 January , 2009 Share Posted 15 January , 2009 There was an idea, last year I think, when someone else came across a medal in similar circumstances to put forum pals to work researching it and collating as much information on the recipient as possible before putting it on an auction site and letting the money raised from it's sale to go to a good cause. Why not try that with this one? Cheers, Nigel
