Cavair Posted 14 January , 2009 Share Posted 14 January , 2009 Can anyone point me to any archives / lists of soldiers in the 2nd Battalion at the outbreak of war, or in particular prior to war in 1911 and before? I have been searching for a grt uncle Richard Nightingale BANKS, born Chorlton Lancs 1885. No trace in marriage and death indexes after the war, so he either dropped the Nightingale middle name or was overseas. While searching for clues for his whereabouts before and after the war, I have found a Richard BANKS in the 2nd Coldstream at Hartley Wintney, Hants in 1911 census, correct age, but cannot yet access the census pages to see if it lists where he was born. (there is a RB born in Hendon 1885 according to FreeBMD, so this Coldstream one could be him) My Richard was in the Hampshire TA 9th Cyclist Batt svc no 39882 during the war (my sister had a paid researcher and he said Richard joined at Hants TA Hamilton House Southampton, but this may have been a presumption as have now been told this svc no. is a conscript.!) Served in India 1918 Supposedly Returned home Dec 1919 via Canada, but now know he was in Reading War Hospital in late 1918 "severely sick" after retrun from India. (Hants regt records) so dont know if these 2 Richards could be the same - could the Coldstream one have come out of the Army before the war and was then conscripted.? Though to me it is a mystery as to why my Richard was in Hants Regt when he was born in Lancashire, tho does that necessarily mean anything unusual, or does it indicate he was in Hants before the war? which is why i need to find out about this RB in the Coldstream ! many thanks for any help!
