llysfaen Posted 13 January , 2009 Share Posted 13 January , 2009 My half 2nd cousin, twice removed, Maurice Wileman Fitch, born 1897. ----------------------------------------------------- UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 Name: Maurice Wileman Fitch Birth Place: Govan, Glasgow Residence: Glasgow Death: 20 May 1917 - France & Flanders Rank: Private Regiment: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Battalion: 5/6th Battalion. Number: 201692 Type of Casualty: Killed in action Theater of War: Aldershot. ----------------------------------------------------- I am puzzled by 'Theatre of War: Aldershot'. Does this mean that he was at Aldershot when he died of his wounds, or that his unit was sent to war from there? If he did indeed fall in France & Flanders, is there anyone who might know exactly where his unit was fighting on that day of May 20th 1917? I looked at 'The Long, Long, Trail' site, but could not find anything specific for that day for his battalion. Many thanks in advance... ..... Steven. For "Cameronians, 5/6th Battalion, on the May 20th 1917" read 5th Battalion WD. Attached is a Cover Sheet from the WD of the 6th Bn for Oct 1918. It reads: "According to Order of Battle the 1/5 and 1/6 Bns amalgamated in May 1916. Diaries have been rendered separately". I have also attached my transcription of the 5th Bn WD for the Month of May, 1917. Hope this helps. Tom.
