Hi,

I was wondering if anybody can help me locate any information about an ancestor of mine who fought in WW1 and was in the 6th Ghurka Rifles. I believe his full name is maurice henry howard smith. If anyone can offer any assistance iy would be very much appreciated. Look forward to your reply's.

Welcome to the forum.

Because he was in the Gurkhas he'd be in the Indian Army rather than the British Army. His medal details would be held elsewhere, however the British Medal Office have got a medal index card for him, but it simply refers you to the India Office.... typical Government bureaucracy :lol:

And further to Les (eviltaxman)'s post, to find out what records were held by the India Office, you'll need to refer to ... The British Library.

Thanks guys you've been a great help and it's very much appreciated. I have tried lloking on the British Libraries website but can't seem to get anywhere. Could i possibly trouble any of you for a little more guidance. many thanks john.

Did he stay in the Army after 1921/1922?

Did he serve in the Royal Flying Corps and then join the RAF?

Did he serve in the Indian Army?

  • If he did, contact The British Library, Oriental and India Office Collections, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB.
