Remembered Today:

Flying Log abbreviations

My grandfather's flying log has recently surfaced; he was an observer in RE 8's and I need help deciphering the following entries which appear regularly:

NF Patrol

ANF Patrol

Contact Patrol

MQNF Patrol

Shoot

ANF Shoot

Any info would be gratefully received.

Contact Patrol was a mission where they co-operated with the infantry, by maintaining "contact" with them, reporting the whereabouts of the infantry to HQ, possibly providing supporting fire with their machine guns. Towards the end of the war contact may have been by wireless telegraph; before that it was a question of dropping messages or occassionally using loudhailers.

"Shoot" refered to an artillery co-op mission, where they literally controlled the fire "shooting" of the guns by wireless messages giving corrections onto the target, sometimes actually identifying the targets themselves.

But I can't think what the abbreviations could be.

I think that NF is Neutralisation Fire, ie directing artillery fire onto targets to 'neutralise' them. There must have been different forms of such patrols.
