WASMAN Posted 15 March , 2004 Share Posted 15 March , 2004 My home town of Atherton is now approximately 5 square miles in size, back during the Great War it was a lot smaller with a population at the beginning of the 20th century of 16000, a look up on the SDGW CD shows that 193 men born in this small town died , it seems a high price for a small mining town. John_Hartley Posted 15 March , 2004 Share Posted 15 March , 2004 Many small communities suffered greatly. You don't really appreciate it unless you count SDGW or the people named on war memorials - and then relate it to population. The four memorials I have researched in my area of Stockport have 220 names. The population in the Urban District Council area was around 10000. It really comes home when you see the same small streets cropping up again and again as where they lived.
