Can anyone tell me how I would find out when George Sturdy became an officer, also how would I find out when he joined up if this is possible.

He was in the 6th Bn., York and Lancaster Regiment.

He was killed 9th October 1917 aged 21.

Thanks.

1. Easy to do. Look him up at the London Gazette website. The promotions and appointments of all officers were announced in that paper. The search engine on the website is a little iffy, but you should find him if you persist.

2. Less easy depending on where you live. His service file is held at the National Archives in Kew. I've looked up the reference. There is only one officer named G. Sturdy, and his file is document number WO 339/97823.
