apwright Posted 27 March , 2009 Author Share Posted 27 March , 2009 Great photos, everyone! Keep them coming. Couple more from Salonika: Salonika (Lembet Road) Cemetery in 1919 and 2009: The three graves in the foreground are (left to right) those of G/1228 (ex 4912) Colour Serjeant John Isaac CUTLER, 2nd (Garrison) Bn Royal Irish Fusiliers, who died of heart failure on 12 Oct 1916 aged 54, and the Bulgarian POWs Pte Tsenko K. KAMENOV (3rd Infantry Regt) and Pte Stoycho Atanas STOYKOV (13th Infantry Rgt), both of whom also died on 12 Oct 1916. The old wooden crosses give the details as T. KANTSOFF and N. ATHANISOFF respectively, but as the headstones were made in Bulgaria, they can hopefully be relied on as being correct...

apwright Posted 27 March , 2009 Author Share Posted 27 March , 2009 Block 4 of the Italian Cemetery in Salonika, 1919 and 90 years on: The notice on the right in the old photo reads "4° CAMPO, DAL N° 192 al N° 254, DAL 5-7-917 AL 2-9-917" (i.e. grave nos. 192 to 254 from 5 Jul to 2 Sep 1917). The graves must have been renumbered since, as they are not quite the same any more. The single graves on the left, corresponding to the large memorials in the old photo, are lieutenants. Those behind merely humble privates! Adrian
