Guest Stokes74 Posted 14 March , 2004 Share Posted 14 March , 2004 I am trying to trace my Granddad in the first world war, I haven't got his medals and cannot be sure of his reg number, but have found a possible match with:Private William Geogre Stokes no.2668 KRRC (on the medal index cards at the N.A.) ,but I can't find any more information to confirm whether this is my granddad or not. Can any help me or suggest my next move? I do know his home address and his next of kin information. He was definately in the Kings Royal Rifles Corps. Guest Stokes74 Posted 14 March , 2004 Share Posted 14 March , 2004 Hi , I am trying to trace my Granddad in the first world war, Private William Geogre Stokes. He was definately in the Kings Royal Rifles Corps. I have looked at the N.A. but his service papers are not there, and I cannot narrow the search down with the medal rolls becauce I don't know his reg. number. Can anyone suggest where I might be able to find out his reg number? from regimental records or something? I do know his home address and his next of kin information. . Chris_Baker Posted 14 March , 2004 Share Posted 14 March , 2004 You could try finding his entry in the relevant Absent Voters list, if you know the electoral area that he lived in. They quite often give useful military detail.
tincie Posted 24 December , 2004 Share Posted 24 December , 2004 Was your Grandad a casualty of the WW1? If so, this is the only Stokes died WW1 that is listed on the CWG database. STOKES, WILLIAM JOHN ????? Rifleman King's Royal Rifle Corps Service no: 10934 Died: 31/10/1914 Comemerated: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL Panel 51 and 53. Have you checked locally for Rolls of Honour? Also newspaper archives (try local Library). This is how I found my Great Uncle and his service number. (But, unfortunately, it's easier if they died) Hope this helps.
