alanneil Posted 28 November , 2008 Share Posted 28 November , 2008 Can anyone tell me what the strength of the 1st Battalion Royal Scots was when it arrived back in England in November 1914 from India and how many soldiers returned to Scotland in 1919. Many thanks, Alan
dycer Posted 28 November , 2008 Share Posted 28 November , 2008 Alan, Purely for comparative figures,if you are successful in your request. The strength of the 8th Royal Scots(TF) on arrival in France on 5 November 1914 was 29 Officers and 939 Other Ranks. The Battalion started its return from France on 26 March 1919 with a Cadre strength of 11 Officers and 89 Other Ranks. I,too, would be interested in seeing the strength of its Regular Battalion. George
Old Tom Posted 28 November , 2008 Share Posted 28 November , 2008 Hello, I can't quote any strengths, but the topic is interesting. Only a few musings. As a regular battalion I would assume by 1919 it would be up to establishment. The TF battalion would I suppose have demobilised many soldiers and a return at cadre strength would not, I suggest, be comparable. Of course the number of individual members of the regular battalion that went to France in 1914 and survived to return in 1919 is likely to be quite small. dycer Posted 29 November , 2008 Share Posted 29 November , 2008 Tom, I agree totally with your comparison point. Anecdotally, there was only 1 1914 Man in the 8th Royal Scots Cadre when they returned home. George
