Remembered Today:

RFA Gunner

I have tried via numerous website searches and consulting what is to be found at this Forum (and perhaps some of the pages that are not currently available due to reorganization may have provided the answers) but due to my limited understanding of Army formations (and jargon) I am going round in circles trying to identify the Division(s) this RFA Gunner may have been associated with, and therefore which (if any) actions he may have been involved in.

My sense is that the 47th Division and/or the 60th Division may have been involved?

The following has been assembled from the Service Record of Arthur Stanley Hulland (not to be confused with Holland).

31 May 1915 he joined 1/6 London Brigade, Royal Artillery (Territorial Force) Regimental Number 947.

Date Unknown he was in 2/6 London Brigade, Royal Artillery (Territorial Force) Regimental Number 955035.

By 29 May 1915 he was in 2/15 County of London Battery, Royal Field Artillery (on this day as Bombardier 955035 he signed to say he would “Serve in any place outside the United Kingdom in the event of National emergency”. )

Lon. Bgd. RFA Preliminary Training - Gunner 3 May 1912 - 30 October 1912

Lon. Bgd. RFA Annual Training - Gunner 28 July 1912 - 11 August 1912

Lon. Bgd RFA 16 Res. Annual Training - Gunner 17 July 1913 - 27 July 1913

Lon. Bgd RFA 16 Res. Annual Training - Gunner 17 July 1914 - 27 July 1914

QUESTION: See Attached - is it 16 Reserve and if what unit was that or was it meant to be 1/6 and poorly written?

Embodied [at Loughborough Junction, London] 5 August 1914

Lon. Bde 16 [1/6] Res Trans from 16 [1/6] Bty29 September 1914

Lon F.A. Bde Promoted acting Bombardier 1 January 1915

2/15 Bty promoted acting Corporal 28 August 1915

QUESTION: Was the 2/15 the result of the change whereby Divisions and Brigades had names changed to numbers?

268 Bde [Details partially illegible due to damage] “Continued in the Service under ---1916 --- fered”

It then lists details and sums of money re a Bounty paid/to be paid for presumably remaining in the Army?

Home 31 May 1915 - 22 June 1916

Expeditionary Force France 23 June 1916 - 30 November 1916

Embarked Southampton 23 June 1916

Disembarked [writing of port illegible] France 24 June 1916

O.C. Bde Posted to B Battery 301st Brigade RFA 30 August 1916 (after reorganization in Field)

QUESTION: What was the 301st (presumably) Brigade?

Expeditionary Force Salonika 1 December 1916 - 15 June 1917

Embarked Marseille 1 December 1916

Disembarked Salonika 9 December 1916

Embarked Salonika 16 June 1917

Disembarked Alexandria 16 June 1917

O.C. Bde Posted to A/268 Brigade RFA 22 June 1917 (Field)

Then there is a notation “A” Battery became “B’ Battery, 301st Bde 24 March 1918

Embarked Alexandria 18 March 1919

En Route [for UK] 19 March 1919 - 6 April 1919

Home 7 April 1919

Thank you in advance for any clarification received.
