Remembered Today:

Casualty returns / Roll calls

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to find out more about when and where my gt-uncle was wounded (later died of). It was reported in his local paper 26 June 1915 so I'm assuming it would have been May/June but till I can get a more accurate date it's difficult to get much more info.

I know units took roll calls and sent in casualty reports - do these still exist and if so where would they be found. I can't see any mention of them on TNA website.

He was Pvt George McDonald, Royal Scots Fusiliers, 1st Batt - 6529

Died of wounds 24 Oct 1915

Well I got the 1st Bn war diaries for May / June and pretty grim reading they make. Many enties along the lines of "2 dead, 5 wounded - quiet day". Although the 17th June has 199 OR wounded 202 OR missing - obviously not such a quiet day.

Although there are mentions of officer casualties by name there are non for ORs.

Anyone have any ideas where else there are likely to be details of individual casualties - or are these just unlikely to exist
