Thanks.

I believe the 1/4th Dorsets depot was grouped under No.6 Reserve Bn. (India). There were a number of 1/4th Dorset officers serving there at the end of the war. I dont have the CBI numbers to hand. Would appreciate a copy of his leave pass if you dont mind. I will PM you my email address.

Hi, Not sure if this is relevant to your query but I have just been lent an embroidery for a WW1 exhibtion. The embroidery commemorates Pte T.Howells 52945, 8th Welsh Pioneers, No5 Reserve Battallion, Kirkee Camp, India 1917 18 1919. Haven't seen anyone else mention the presence

of the Welsh Regiment at Kirkee.

Interested in the comment about the 5th Reserve Battalion as my great uncle, private Thomas William Lowe, joined this battalion in 1918, January, having landed in Bombay December 1917. He originally enlisted with the South Wales Borderers 4th Battalion in December 1915 and I am really struggling to make the connection. He spent a lot of time in numerous hospitals such as Calaba, Kirkee and Deccan Bridge, but his medical records are too unclear to establish with what, although he seems to have been diagnosed with malaria in Salonika late 1917. Any clarification would be welcomed

Hi,

My Grandfather Owen Roberts Pte 31515 4th Battalion SWB served in Kirkee Prisoner of War Camp Kirkee guarding Turkish Prisoners of War. L/Cpl Thomas William Lowe your

Grandfather's Army Number is 31715, it appears that he was there at Xmas 1918, I know this because I have a copy of a Xmas Card from my Grandfather, other Regiments

listed on the Xmas Card were -

Royal Warwickshire Regiment, The Cheshire's, Royal Welch Fusiliers, South Wales Borderers, The Worcester's and The North Staffordshire Regiments. Ancestry records show

they were issued the British War & Victory Medal whilst in the Reserve Infantry Battalion. It is believed that he was also evacuated to India after suffering from Malaria

I was unaware that there was a Prisoner of War Camp at Kirkee, so thanks for this advice.

Saw on ebay photograph details of a tobacco tin inscribed Prisoners of War Camp Kirkee India 1914-1918 A V Lawes 62515 8th Welch Pioneers, so he was most likely a guard like Huw's grandfather

I now own this embroidery, so whilst researching it found his old thread.  Interestingly Pte. Thomas Howells only appears to have earned the British War Medal as it is the only one listed on his MIC which suggests he only served in India and not in Mesopotamia with the 8th Welsh?

And his MIC.
