Remembered Today:

What uniform is this ?

This photo of my Great Grandfather shows him wearing what appears to be a Military uniform although the cap badge appears, to me, to be the Red Cross emblem.

I’m assuming that he was involved in WW1 in some way and more than likely on the medical side as his occupation was Physician/Surgeon.

He was born in 1861 in Lancashire and died in 1938 if it helps.

Can anyone identify the uniform, please ?

(I have tried zooming in on the badges but can't see any detail)

Well at 53 at the start of the war I'd guess that he might have been in one the ambulance services. This wasn't just people who drove ambulances but manned first line medical care just behind the line. He'd have been in good company for example the composer Vaughn Williams being too old for active service was in the ambulance service (and very proud of it). Still in range of shot and shell.

Yes, thanks, I have already looked at Medal Index cards but there are quite a few 'William Valentine's' there including some who were in the Royal Army Medical Corps. I think I really need to do some more research around the uniform, British Red Cross (when their site is up and running again) and ambulances etc.

Thanks for your help.
