It might be Acting 2nd Corporal. I've seen a bunch of medals (albeit to the Royal Engineers) with the rank of 2nd Corporal on them. I don't know what a 2nd Corporal is, unfortunately.

2nd Corporal was a rank peculiar to the ASC,AOC and RE. It was equivalent to a Corporal in other Regiments but the 2nd Corporal wore only a single stripe. (As did a Lance Corporal which at that time it was an appointment rather than a substantive rank).

669112 A 2 CPL C.J. DICK C E

669112 = his service number

A 2 CPL. = acting second corporal

C.J. Dick. = his initials and name

C.E. = Canadian Engineers

Thanks everyone -- for all your help -- this helps make sense and clears up some questions I had with his archive records too... Marni
