BigT Posted 18 November , 2008 Share Posted 18 November , 2008 This card was loaned to me by an elderly friend. It referes to her Father, Private 3111 WH Best 1/6th Duke of Wellington's Regiment. The Card is 4.5 by 3.25 inches, the reverse is of same design with the words " Keep this card". What was it for? Sorry about the sideways image, the technology defeated me. Also the lady said that he had been decorated but his MIC only lists he Pip Sqeak & Wilfred. I assume any other decorations would be listed on the MIC? tootrock Posted 18 November , 2008 Share Posted 18 November , 2008 Note that the date is printed, so whatever the card was for only took place on that day. Martin
SteveE Posted 18 November , 2008 Share Posted 18 November , 2008 Also the lady said that he had been decorated but his MIC only lists he Pip Sqeak & Wilfred. I assume any other decorations would be listed on the MIC? In a word No. Although there are MICs annotated with a reference to a 'Gallantry' award this was not the purpose for that particular MIC which was to show the entitlement to the 'Campaign' awards. There is another series of cards which detail any 'Gallantry' award (NA series WO372/23 and WO372/24). The lady is quite right, he was decorated with the MM. There is another card in the WO372/23 series which details the award of his Military Medal. These are not online with Ancestry so will have to be paid for. However, the detail on the card will show the details for this: London Gazette #31405, 17 June 1919. Link to the Gazette entry is Here 265962 Cpl. Best, W. H., 6th Bn. (Keighley). Hope it helps. Unless it commemorates their embarkation at Dover. Perhaps a card permitting family or friend access to the quayside?

Many thanks in anticipation
