Peter Shand Posted 18 November , 2008 Share Posted 18 November , 2008 If you mean 4th October, 1917, the 6th battalion were at Siege Camp near Ypres on October 2nd and on the 3rd marched to dugouts at Canal Bank. On the 4th, after a hot meal at 1:00 am, Headquarters occupied Varney Farm, while A & B companies moved up and dug in between the Steenbeck and the Langemark- Winnipeg Road, and C andD companies dug in around Varney Farm. The attack opened at 6:00 am but the 6th Borders duty was to support the other battalions of the Brigade. At 7:00 am, A and B companies moved to the front and dug in in front of Pheasant Farm, with HQ moving to Snipe Farm, and C and D companies entrenching to the rear of Pheasant Farm. Heavy shelling caused many casualties . This summary comes from Col. H C Wylly's The Border Regiment in the Great War, p152. Stebie9173 Posted 18 November , 2008 Share Posted 18 November , 2008 Just in case that you haven't seen them, Ivor Callaby's service records are on Ancestry.co.uk (which is free access for November). Steve.
