riviera Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 I wondered if anyone has acess to the regimental index roll for the 1/8th london regiment, the Post Office Rifles? I am researching the service of my Grandfather, Pte John Walsh 52254,later 377347.He enlisted on 10.2.1915 joining the Liverpool Regiment.(25990) I am trying to establish when he transferred from the Liverpool Regt into the London Regt and his movements during the war.I know from his MIC he served in France from 27.8.1915, but I don't know who with.I would be most greatfull for any help or advice you may be able to give. Thanks, Alan.
sotonmate Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 Riviera If you post the medal details from the MIC it might help. The jumble of letters and numbers I mean. Sotonmate

HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 If he transferred to the Liverpool Regiment from the London Regiment his medals would have been issued from the Liverpool Regt Medal Rolls, as medals were issued from the unit last served with but named up to the initial Regiment served with overseas!!! Unless his Service Papers have survived it is unlikely that any dates of Transfer will be traceable,The Medal Rolls; like the MiC; generally only give date of embarkation & discharge. riviera Posted 18 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 18 November , 2008 He enlisted into the 3rd Battalion Liverpool Regiment which was a training/feeder battalion which never went overseas. I have his medals which are engraved,3/25990 L.pool Regt He must have transferred to another Liverpool Battn before going overseas? And then transferred to the 1/8th Londons some time later?I presume he Enlisted into 3rd Liverpools, transferred to another Liverpool Battn, got wounded,(he was gassed)transferred toLabour Corps then transferred to the 1/8th London Regiment. Is there no other way of finding out the actual dates of transfers apart from his service papers?I was told there is a slight chance that the Regimental medal rolls may have some information on them. If anyone knows any other way of finding out please help.Thanks,Alan.
Stebie9173 Posted 18 November , 2008 Share Posted 18 November , 2008 The London "TP" prefix rolls usually have dates on them, Alan. His medals should be on the London Regiment Rolls. Hopefully someone will have time to find the details for you. STeve.
riviera Posted 18 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 18 November , 2008 Forgive my ignorance Steve, what are"TP"prefix rolls?I am still fairly new to the forum.
Stebie9173 Posted 18 November , 2008 Share Posted 18 November , 2008 Sorry, TP is just the prefix on the medal roll reference you posted on Post #3. You need to look at the Medal Roll ledger book. If you look at Post #6 and Post #11 on the link below, you will see examples of medal rolls: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...;p=1053109& The London Regiment ledgers are MUCH better, because they show the battalions served with AND the dates they served overseas with them.
