dally Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 Hello Pals. I'm researching my great grandfather, 14425 CSM Walter Dalzell 8th batt Border regiment. He survived the war altho he was wounded twice, once in May 1916 and also on the 26th October 1918. There's a small passage in the local newspaper that reads he was gassed in Salonika on the 26/10/18. Now, from what I have discovered the 8th battalion along with other battalions of the 50th Division were disbanded in July 1918. I'm trying to find out how he got to Salonika to receive this injury, which regiment? The 9th batt Border reg were in Salonika through out the war, could he have gone to them.? I have his medal card and it only has the 8th batt Border reg on it. He sadly died long before I was born, I would loved to have met him.
sotonmate Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 Dally Only the 9th Battalion of the Borders were in Salonika. According to the Long Long Trail the 8th was taken into a Composite Brigade of 50th Division on 22 Jun 1918,and on 7 July the 8th was disbanded in France. From that we could assume that they were assimilated into units of the Composite Brigade, whatever number that was. I can't see which at the moment because of the revision of the Division pages on the LLT. Sotonmate
dally Posted 17 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 17 November , 2008 Sorry, my mistake (it's been a long day) The 8th battalion were of course part of the 25th division until June 1918 when they were taken into the composite brigade in the 50th division. As you say Sotonmate they were disbanded in July 1918. My question is, where did the men of the disbanded 8th battalion go? Which battalion of which regiment did my great grandfather go to, to be in Salonika on the 26th October 1918? Thanks for your help Sotonmate.
