welshdoc Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 I was wondering as part of yet another research project, how uncommon it was for the members of the ASC to be awarded Military medals? Im sure we discussed this before , but I cant for he life of me remember when or where. If I remember correctly it was much less often than RA or RE. Anyone have any ideas? HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 They are by no means "Rare" to the ASC/RASC but are relatively scarcer to them,in comparison to RA/RE,they can also be found to men of the ASC/RASC who served as Motor Mechanics/Drivers etc; with RAMC/RGA/AA Batteries;Ammunition Parks.etc;,& even L.A.M.B.!!! {The one I have to a L/Cpl A.J.Sproule; 14th L.A.M.B. Mesopotamia was only recorded on the MM MiC to this unit the LG & actual medal just state RASC!!,so they can throw up some very pleasant surprises! welshdoc Posted 17 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 17 November , 2008 Yes there can be surprises I just picked up a 1914 star trio (T28490 Poole) only to discover he was awarded a MM in the Birthday honours awards in July 1919. So I would guess it was for good work rather than an out and out bravery award. He was attached to 3rd field ambulance. No skill on my part just pure luck. HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 1919 Birthday/Peace Honours of the MM are likely to be for specific Gallantry, but late awards or for previously unrewarded acts, that were recommended earlier & filtered down,it is highly unlikely the MM was awarded for "General Good Work"unlike the DCM or MC;though it could be a recommendation of periodic constant bravery rather than a signal act,for examle when awarded to an Officers Batman for his constant accompaning of his Officer on Patrols etc during a long period, rather than for a one off act of rescuing a wounded man or capturing a MG post etc;
welshdoc Posted 17 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 17 November , 2008 Thanks "Harry" as always a very well informed answer. To continue a good day I have just bought online a match to one of my orphans. Only need his 14 star and plaque now.

Did you ever find out any more about this chap and where/when he won his MM ? I remember we discussed him a couple of years ago. Grovetown Posted 18 November , 2008 Share Posted 18 November , 2008 According to Michael Young's Army Service Corps 1902-1918; 1,761 MMs were awarded to the ASC, with there also being 19 one Bar awards, and one 2nd Bar. Best wishes, GT.

Hello David; sadly not too much more has as yet been discovered I am awaiting ancestry to upload the MM Cards for a Colour copy of his Card & I did discover his wife was Killed during the Blitz in 1940 in London{she appears in Civilian Casualties in the CWGC listings}
PPCLI Posted 20 November , 2008 Share Posted 20 November , 2008 I am awaiting ancestry to upload the MM Cards for a Colour copy of his Card It's possible that you may be waiting a while. I know someone from the forum who enquired about the Military Medal cards on more than one occasion over the last two or three years - I think to ask whether the original card had an address on the reverse side - only to be told that the cards weren't currently in the possession of the NA. This was pre-WFA/Ancestry involvement. Reading between the lines, the NA gave the impression that the MM cards had been released, possibly to an individual, as part of a research project. Either that, or they were making up an excuse not to do the look-up. Stuart
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 20 November , 2008 Share Posted 20 November , 2008 The DCM/MM/MSM/MiD/TFEM Cards were always available @ the NA "Online" I had assumed that they were passed over to the WFA along with the MiC proper~they do have DCM;MSM & MiD cards available? Curious??
PPCLI Posted 20 November , 2008 Share Posted 20 November , 2008 As you say, all these MICs have been uploaded to DocumentsOnline, so at some point after the scanning process was completed they have been 'loaned' out. My correspondent states, 'I wanted to have a look at the back of his MM card but TNA say that someone has all the MM cards so they 'can make a book', I asked them who had the cards and they were 'unable to tell me'. I have asked for clarification, are they unwilling to tell me who the person is, or are they unable because they have forgot who has them? Frustrating!'
