Remembered Today:

Unable to find medal list

I have been on the web with Ancestry.com for a few days on and off and am unable to find a medal card for: H M Allan 264353 GNR RA. I have his victory medal and have double checked the wording but can still find no match.

Does anyone have any ideas of what to do next, surely there must be a way to see if this man ever existed.

A very frustrated,

Alan

Alan

Try the National Archive as Ancestry do not have all MIC transcribed unfortunatley. If it is on NA then you have to pay a small down load fee. I suspect some one on here will pop up with the info you need but do have a look at the NA site?

Alan Just had a look at NA and putting in those details returns 0matches. Expanding search criteria by not putting in so many specifics, Reg and Nos it then offers 97 matches . You then need to scroll through them all to find the exact or best match. Try the same search criteria on Ancestry too.

Hope this helps

What is the secret of searching the NA catalogues?!

As is often the case, less is more. In this instance I entered Allan as "Surname" and his service number 264353 as "Other Keywords". Works equally well (3 hits - one of which is the one wanted) if you just enter his service number.

He's not on Ancestry but I'm not surprised as surnames beginning with the letter A are not well represented yet.
