Guest IdlePete Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 Looking for information on this soldier Walter Dunderdale 2233 of the Lincolnshire Reg. 5th Batallion This is my Great Grandfather, we have little knowledge of him due to my Grandfather passing away in 1963. I saw in another post he was a member of A Company in Sgt Porter's list (Lens 1917) and that he was listed in wounded in Grimsby News 3.8.1917. Found his medal card, landed in France 1st March 1915, but his other records are lost. Any information on when he might have been injured/what type or the general experience of a soldier in the 5th Lincolnshire during the time he served would be greatly appreciated. Any pointers in the direction of other places to look would be good too. Has anyone come across informtion on any other Lincolnshire Dunderdales? One served in the Canadian army and died 1917. Bingo794 Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 Hi Pete 10125 Pte. John Thomas Dunderdale 6th Linc.R. was my Grandmother's brother-in-law. KIA Galipolli 9th August, 1915. From Wrawby, married in Brigg into the Bulleyment family, and worked for Springs Jam factory. The other Tom Dunderdale was also KIA in Galipolli 8th August, 1915 with the 6th Battalion. From Keadby near Scunthorpe. Chris Bailey, Jim Davis and Steve Bramley will have information for you, but when I get time, I will have a root around in my paperwork to see what I have on him. Steve Bramley Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 Hello Pete, Howdo Bingo , I'll have a proper look through my records later, but I can provide a little now off the top. Likely to have attested on 2/3rd September 1914 at Luton where the division was in training at the time. He is among a large contingent of Gainsborough men so am I correct in asuming he was from there? He was also likely to have been originally in D Company (as were most of the G'boro men). After landing at Havre (France) he would have seen action in 1915 in the Kemmel (near messines ridge) Sanctuary Wood and Hill 60 sectors before moving to France to take part in the final phase of the battle of Loos at the Hohenzollern Redoubt 13.10.15. This providing that he was not wounded in any of the previously mentioned sectors. If he took part in the redoubt attack he was extremely lucky to survive unscathed (at least 2/3rds casualties). I don't have his name on any casualty lists. If he was still with the battalion after Loos he would have travelled with them for a very brief 'sojourn' in Egypt, retuning to France at Vimy between January and late April 1916. Then moving on to the Gommecourt area where the 5th Lincs were in reserve for the attack there becoming involved during the night/next day (2/7/16). He was at Lens in 1917 with A Company as he is listed (as you noticed) in Sgt Porters platoon (No1). I suspect he was wounded on either 19th June or July 1st 1917, but cannot at the moment confirm this, will have alook later but hope this helps for now, Regards, Steve. P.S. This linkhere would be a good place to start your search.

yellow Posted 16 December , 2008 Share Posted 16 December , 2008 Dunderdale DCM is one of the hand full of mens story in Deeds That Thrill The Empire. If I remember correctly there is an artists impression of him throwing a hand grenade.
