Waddell Posted 16 November , 2008 Share Posted 16 November , 2008 Just posting this for general interest. Noticed the story late sunday night. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/11/14/2420271.htm The auction house representative seems a little surprised that a New Zealander could write a diary. Waddell Posted 17 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 17 November , 2008 No offence intended to the Kiwi's Allie. Just laughing at the Auction house rep's choice of words. He could have just said diaries written by New Zealand soldiers are rare. Scott
alliekiwi Posted 17 November , 2008 Share Posted 17 November , 2008 That's okay, Scott. I was kidding! Allie
bmac Posted 18 November , 2008 Share Posted 18 November , 2008 Interesting and extraordinary price. Wonder if a copy was made before the sale so that historians could take a look? A friend of mine has just discovered that her mother has kept her grandfather's diary written during the Siege of Kut - he was one of the few OR survivors having been taken prisoner by the Turks. Depending on its contents I have suggested they might consider donating a copy to the IWM. Like to see it myself!
Waddell Posted 19 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 19 November , 2008 Bill, Agreed it is an extraordinary price. You would like to think it has gone to an institution or copies have been made for the benefit of historians. I get a little worried when these treasures are snapped up and hidden away when the information in them may be of benefit to many people. We don't know the full story though, maybe the buyer has some attachment to the soldier or regiment. Scott.
