Absent Voters List

Can anyone tell me whether an absent voters list exists for the Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, area ?. I contacted Wakefield records office where the Pateley Bridge polling lists are kept for 1918 and was told that my grandfather is on it marked "A" for absent, but only his name and no regiment details at all. I thought that all absent voters details were kept on a seperate list giving unit details, service numbers etc as for example the Leeds AV list. The lady I spoke to seemed unsure what I was asking about and did`nt know of any list, but did`nt seem too interested anyway !. My grandad was Thomas Shuttleworth, service no. 205623, and was in the KOYLI. I don`t know which battalion or part however.

Also, can anyone tell me where an absent voters list for Sheffield would be kept ?. Any help with either much appreciated.

You could try the North Yorkshire archives too for the absent voters list, their archivists are really knowledgeable and helpful.

Contact them here: archives@northyorks.gov.uk

Or 'phone them on: 01609 777585

Hi Tom,

the service number shown above was allocated to the 1/4th Bn or 2/4th Bn, best bet is the medal rolls at the NA to find out which. I've not come across an AVL for Harrogate and surrounding boroughs, but should you find one let us know, as for Sheffield AVL it no longer exists,

Jon
