Tartan_Terrier Posted 15 November , 2008 Share Posted 15 November , 2008 I've been looking through another of my Great Grandfathers' service records and have a couple of questions for the more experienced members of the forum. On his attestation form where it usually says: SHORT SERVICE (Three years with the Colours) ATTESTATION OF ....... The word 'one' has been handwritten before the word 'three', which has been crossed out, and the words 'and in the reserve' have been added after the word 'Colours)' The handwritten word 'one' has then been crossed out again, and the word 'three' has been written instead. Is all this crossing out and re-writing likely to have been confusion caused by him having some prior service? Is this kind of thing common? The regiment he enlisted into has also been changed from the Northumberland Fusiliers to the Yorkshire Regiment, could this have some bearing on the subject? Unfortunately I cannot decipher where his prior service was, but it seems to be Volunteer T?????. Cheers in advance for any input. T_T

Tartan_Terrier Posted 16 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 16 November , 2008 Since I noticed someone voicing concerns over copyright issues I'll post a link to the relevant page rather than just posting the image: http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=V...amp;pid=1385976 Cheers T_T
Graham Stewart Posted 16 November , 2008 Share Posted 16 November , 2008 Sorry T-T that link won't allow me in and without a name we're stuck here. To be honest as it's a query over a relative and you'd only be producing the relevent sections, I don't think copyright would be an issue as it's not going to be reproduced into book form. Tartan_Terrier Posted 16 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 16 November , 2008 Strange that the link didn't work. His name was 17510 Pte. Arthur Nixon of the 10th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.

Muerrisch Posted 18 November , 2008 Share Posted 18 November , 2008 Difficult to read: I read that it is dated X September 1914, which agrees broadly with his number, but I also read that 15a. has him signing for three years and appears to be a scissors and paste job. Either way, I suspect he was doomed to serve for the duration.

Either way, I suspect he was doomed to serve for the duration. Well, he probably would have been, but he was wounded at Loos and discharged as unfit the year after. What I don't understand is why there are so many changes (including the pasted on paragraph that you mentioned).
