Remembered Today:

IOM and MAC (ASC) - unit abbreviations

Kate Wills

Recommended Posts

I came across a letter to a theatrical newspaper from M2/113861 Private William Henry Fairman, Army Service Corps, 378th Coy ASC, requesting props for the XI MAC concert party.

I assume XI to be 11th, but what is MAC?

Also, comedian Bert Ray wishes to start a concert party, while serving with:

IOM, No 8 Ordnance Works Company, 4th Corps, BEF

He's not in the Isle of Man, so what is IOM in this case please?

Not sure but most likely Inspector of Munitions

Thanks Op-Ack; that would fit-in with Ordnance Works, who were presumably part of the RAOC.

Any ides about XI MAC?

IOM is Inspector of Ordnance Machinery. They were officers of the Army Ordnance Department, responsible for what today is called quality control on repairs and replacements.
