Does anyone know which RNAS units were here, and whether they would be planes or armoured cars? I'm particularly interested in the base at Kilwa as my grandfather was attached to this running an ASC MT store, thanks, matt

Matt

No 8 Squadron (RNAS) was based in Zanzibar from March 1916 to January 1918.

During this time the Squadron located an Aeroplane Detachment at Kilwa Kiswani between December 1916 and May 1917.

This Detachment moved to Lindi between June and October 1917 and then moved again to Mtua between October and December 1917.

Full details are in recent articles by Peter Dye in "Cross & Cockade International Journal" (see www.crossandcockade.com)

You can also find some details in Dick Cronin, Royal Navy Shipboard Aircraft Developments, 1912-31 (Tonbridge, Kent, Air Britain, 1990, ISBN: 0851301657).

The RNAS' service in East Africa predates 1916, aircraft were used in gunnery spotting against the Konigsburg.
