Graham-McAdam Posted 14 November , 2008 Share Posted 14 November , 2008 Do any of you chaps know Liège well? I'm off on a trip to Liège, Aachen and Valkenburg in a few weeks. If the CWGC cemetery isn't far out of the town I'd volunteer some photography. And are there any Great War sites in the town worth a look. None of this shows up on standard tourist info. so I'd be grateful for a little help.
Regulus 1 Posted 14 November , 2008 Share Posted 14 November , 2008 The Loncin fortress is most certainly worth a visit, was partially blown up in the early war days.

Graham-McAdam Posted 19 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 19 November , 2008 THanks Regulus - looks like a good excuse to escape the Christmas Market!
healdav Posted 20 November , 2008 Share Posted 20 November , 2008 Get in touch with the Tourist Office (they have a website). They have a big pamphlet that lists all the sites in the region, and can help arrange guides, etc. Several of the forts around the city are open to the public at various times (Loncin all the time, I think). Even Eben Emael is not far away.
Niko Posted 20 November , 2008 Share Posted 20 November , 2008 Try the website of the Province de Liège: http://www.ftpl.be/ They have very good information booklets, you can easily download them in pdf: http://www.ftpl.be/frames/page%20new/agenda.html The 'brochures' are very good about the forts of WWI and WWII. They used to have one about the history of both World Wars in the area, including part on the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and the Battle for Liège in 1914. Most of the forts are open, but not at the same time. Have a look at the agenda of this site: http://www.fortenvanbelgie.net/EN/index.html you can have a look which fort is open on what date. The site also describes what is left of the forts. Grtz, Niko.
Graham-McAdam Posted 21 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 21 November , 2008 Thanks RMLI. The Forts site is fabulous, isn't it - once you work out how to read their black on brown text!!
Niko Posted 22 November , 2008 Share Posted 22 November , 2008 That site is indeed great....It is made by one person who visits all the forts and takes all the photos himself. Pity about the colors.
