Cap badge identification

Firstly, apologies for the poor quality/resolution of the photo, I am looking at this on behalf of someone else and do not have the original to rescan. I will try to get a clearer scan soon.

This is my Great Great Uncle, Alfred Slaughter, 1878-1918. We do not know what regiment he served or where, but we think he died in 1918 during the flu epidemic. CWGC doesn't have a listing for him.

Obviously, the cap badge ID is going to be the first thing I need to do to find more about him, any ideas at a first glance on the cap badge, or anything else on his uniform? I can compare ideas with MICs on ancestry.

Thanks,

Chris

Badge is too indistinct to be certain but I think I can make out elements of a 'star' so I'll go with ASC.

If it's Northamptonshire Reg,could be Alfred Percy Slaughter Pte 60067. 19/12/1918,but your man would be older than that.

Just a 1st attempt at ID.

Mike

Yes, I don't believe that to be him. I don't think he had a middle name, also as you said the age is off.

I forgot to mention he was a Norfolk lad, but certainly doesnt look like a Norfolk Regiment badge.

I had similar thoughts. Having looked a bit harder through random badges there are far too many of similar shape to make this an easy ID i think :( Hopefully it'll be possible to get a better scan.

Thanks

The Northamptons badge was round with no "pointy bit" at the top. A similar round badge, with a sphinx at the top, is the Essex Regiment. Also Royal Engineers and ASC are possibilities.

Don't rule any County Regiment out on location, however!

You may want to look at the UK death registers for 1918 considering the death from flu, and also consider extending the search into 1919, just in case.

Steve.

Aye I had all of those in my mind too. Fortunately I have been in contact recently with his great grandson through Ancestry and he found a medal with his service number and regiment...it was indeed ASC.

Looked up his medal card and was discharged with SWB and trio in 1917. His ggrandson thinks he died as late on as 1920, which is why CWGC was turning up nothing.

Next stop Kew and the SWB lists I guess...I almost feel like giving up my job to give myself more time for research

Thanks chaps

The pic is almost certainly ASC. Look at the badge closely and you can make out the shallow pointed star shape of the ASC badge at that time. I will post an example so you can see what I mean.
